INTENSE PULSED LIGHT

At the TMB practice, we know that a clear, smooth and healthy complexion can dramatically affect your overall appearance and contribute to a more youthful look and outlook. Sun damage, pregnancy, skin disorders and certain hereditary conditions can all result in uneven, mottled and discolored skin and can seriously affect your appearance and self image. Many people struggle to deal with these issues on their own, experimenting with every “brightening & lightening” cream on the market with little success. Today’s modern laser and light technology means you can stop wasting time on ineffective miracle creams and start seeing real results. At the TMB practice, our Intense Pulse Light treatments can help clear up hyper-pigmentation and broken blood vessels, fade scars and reveal a smoother, clearer surface and texture to the skin. IPL treatments can also be combined with other restorative non surgical or surgical procedures for truly modern and beautiful overall results you can see and feel.

What Is IPL?

IPL or Intense Pulsed Light (also referred to as photo rejuvenation or photo facials) uses a controlled pulse of very bright light that is delivered by a small handpiece and absorbed by the skin. Cool gel is applied to the surface of the skin for protection and comfort. Small pulses of light are triggered which feel like quick “snaps” against the skin. The light emitted by the handpiece is attracted to the darker pigments in the skin – particularly red and brown pigments. The light energy and heat delivered into the pigmented skin cell works to distress and break up the cell, thereby releasing the darker pigments contained within it. The body takes over and naturally expels these distressed or broken cells by pushing them to the surface and immediately forming new collagen to aid in the healing process. Red and brown pigmentation, sunspots and broken vessels will rise to the surface of the skin and flake off or fade over the course of the next few days, revealing a clearer and more even complexion. Repeated IPL sessions also assist in the continued production of collagen, which helps to keep the skin firm, taut and more youthful. Optimal results are typically seen after a course of 4 to 6 IPL treatments.

Am I a Candidate for Ipl Photo Rejuvenation?

IPL is an effective solution for hyper pigmentation, older pigmented scars, sunspots, broken capillaries around the nose, redness caused by rosacea and overall skin dullness. IPL is non invasive, making it a safe treatment option for patients as young as 14 years old. Because the pulsed light is attracted to red and brown pigments, IPL is not recommended for people of colour as treatment may result in hypo-pigmentation (uneven loss of colour in the skin). It is also important that any patients considering IPL treatments maintain a strict sun protection regimen as sun exposure can cause increased inflammation and pigmentation in the treated area.

What Are the Risks of IPL Photorejuvenation?

IPL is a non invasive procedure making it one of the safer anti aging treatments available. Immediately after your IPL treatment, you may experience increased redness or swelling in the treatment area. Darker brown spots may appear to scab and the surrounding tissue may appear pink. It is important to understand that not all IPL technology or technicians are equal: there are medical grade machines and ones that are approved for use in spas or aesthetic salons. Improper use of the machine and improper administration of the light pulse can results in serious injury and burns.
