LABIAL REPAIR

Labial Reduction/ Labiaplasty Surgery in Toronto & New York

It’s difficult for many women to talk about their anatomy, even more so for the multitude of women who are self-conscious about their appearance of their sexual organs, or who experience discomfort as a result of enlarged labia. Many of these women suffer in silence, and are so insecure about their vaginas that they avoid physical intimacy with their sexual partners. In reality, we know that enlarged labia is a very common characteristic that some women are born with, and some develop as a result of childbirth. If you are one of these women, you are NOT alone! And you CAN do something about it. Labial Reduction (also referred to as Labiaplasty) is a safe, quick procedure that reduces excess labial skin for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance, and can also alleviate physical discomfort caused by large, drooping or protruding labia. Many women also report improved sensation during intercourse after Labiaplasty surgery. At the TMB practice, we understand the delicate nature of this particular topic. During your consultation with Dr. Born, he will listen to your concerns with sensitivity and without judgment so that you can decide if this procedure is right for you.

What Is Labial Reduction Surgery?

Labial Reduction or Labiaplasty is a procedure that reduces the protrusion of enlarged labia minora (the labial “lips”). Protruding or drooping labia can be trimmed, reshaped and made more symmetrical. While the main objective with this particular surgery is the beautification of the labia and genital area, the procedure can also benefit those who experience pain or discomfort during routine physical activities as a result of enlarged labia.

The procedure is performed using local anesthetic with partial IV sedation to ensure the patient’s comfort. In most cases, general anesthetic (full sleep) is not required, and the procedure itself only takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Dr. Born makes an incision lengthwise along the labia and removes excess tissue and skin. The incision is then closed using dissolvable stitches. In some cases, Dr. Born will incorporate micro fat grafting into the procedure, adding volume to the labia majora (outer labia) for a more aesthetically pleasing result.

Am I a Candidate for Labial Reduction Surgery?

While some women seek out labial reduction for purely cosmetic, aesthetic reasons, others are looking to resolve functional issues such as discomfort during certain activities or while wearing certain clothing. You may want to consider Labial Reduction surgery if:

  • You are self-conscious about the appearance of your vagina
  • You notice or are preoccupied by protruding labia
  • You would like to change the size, length and/or shape of your labia
  • You suffer from discomfort, irritation, pain, friction as the result of enlarged or protruding labia
  • The appearance or functionality/feeling of your labia affects your ability to enjoy or participate in certain activities or affects your self esteem

What Are the Risks of Labial Reduction Surgery?

It is important to remember that Labial Reduction surgery is not for everyone. It is a personal choice, and it may not address your particular concerns. Our pre-operative screening process is designed to determine if your expectations CAN be met by this procedure, and if you are a suitable candidate for the surgery. After Labial Reduction surgery, it is normal to experience a certain amount of swelling and bruising, which can cause the labia to appear uneven or misshapen – this will resolve in time. You may experience the odd sharp pain or pulling, this is also normal. Take your medication and avoid uncomfortable activities or positions until the pain subsides. There will be some bleeding and/or oozing from the incision after the surgery, this should subside within 24-48 hours. You can help minimize certain risks by following the advice and instructions of your plastic surgeon, both before and after your surgery. Dr. Born will discuss in detail all of the potential risks associated with this surgery during your private consultation.
